Update: Controlling the Invasive Plants Strategy for Long Lake
2014 has been a busy year for moving forward on the new strategy for treating the invasive species in Long Lake. As you know, thanks to the overwhelming support and feedback from lake residents at the June 28th, 2014 Cheboygan Long Lake Area Association (CLLAA) Annual Meeting, a motion was presented to the Aloha Township Board. This motion asked that the township move forward as quickly as possible with the initial 5 year plan to control the invasive plants and expedite actions to ensure that treatment of the weeds commences in 2015.
Based on the subsequent actions related to the CLLAA motion/recommendation the handoff to move from strategy to action plans was undertaken by the Aloha Township Board. This means going forward the township assumes the coordination, management, and financial responsibility to work with Progressive AE to implement the initial 5 year plan. The lake association will remain closely tied to the implementation, but it is important to note that the township has control of all actions and management including funding for this project.
Furthermore, it is important to recognize that the December property tax assessment from Aloha Township will include the first bill for the special assessment. It is anticipated that the charge will be $183.00 for lakefront owners and $91.50 for deeded lake access owners. This will be collected annualy from 2014-15 to 2018-19 (5 years). For federal income tax purposes this amount cannot be used as a deduction.
The assessment is based on individual owners rather than lots since several lots are owned by individual owners and the township board decided that a per lot basis would place an extra financial burden on them. What we share in common is the ability to use the lake regardless of the amount of lake frontage owned.
Listed below is a recap of activities/meetings by the CLLAA and Aloha Township Board related to the invasive plant treatment strategy.
